“What do you think of when you hear the word library?” I ask a group of new students, prompting them to think about how the library can support them during their college careers.
“Books!” is the unequivocal answer.
They’re not wrong. Libraries still have books, and those books continue to occupy a central place in scholarly conversations. Libraries are more than book warehouses, however, as most of us know. And yet if you’re not working behind the scenes of a library or visiting on a daily basis, you might miss some of the myriad ways libraries function, not to mention the core issues and challenges libraries address.
Welcome to the Gustavus Library’s new blog series: Library Matters / Libraries Matter. Twice a month or so we’ll be bringing you updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the world of academic libraries & the Gustavus Library in particular.
More than just a “Day in the Life” series, although we’ll be doing lots of those posts, too, the Library Matters / Libraries Matter series will expose you to some of the trends, questions, challenges, and goals academic libraries (and ours in particular), consider and address on a regular basis.
Sit back and enjoy the journey. Make sure you subscribe to the blog and follow us on our social media sites. You don’t want to miss this!
