The library is observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day with an online resource guide and an exhibit, Commemorating Controversy, originally created by students on the 150th anniversary of the Dakota-U.S. war. The exhibit is also available in digital form through our institutional repository, GustieScholar, courtesy of the College and Church Archives.
From GustieScholar: “This exhibit was produced by students in the IEX 2012 course Commemorating Controversy: The Dakota-U.S. War of 1862, taught by Professor Elizabeth Baer at Gustavus Adolphus College, and Ben Leonard in conjunction with the Nicollet County Historical Society. The students spent January 2012 immersed in the war’s literature, voices, primary sources, and sites. These panels reflect that student work and exploration. We hope that it communicates their efforts to comprehend this period of national history. It cannot speak for all people and perspectives, and does not necessarily reflect the views of our supporters. This history is emotional, complicated, and difficult. While the focus of this exhibit is on six weeks in 1862, the entire story is much, much more than that.”
