Children, the Qur’an, and Contemporary Islam: Screening of Koran By Heart Posted on May 10th, 2013 by

Come learn more about Islam in both the historical and contemporary periods.  Celebrate our library’s new acquisition of the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf.  The Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library and the Religion Department are sponsoring an event on Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 pm in Confer 128.

Koran By Heart is a documentary that follows three young Muslim children in their journey to memorize the entire Qur’an. None of these children speak Arabic as their first language making this a daunting challenge. The film reveals some of the challenges faced by the next generation of Muslims and the dynamic world of contemporary Muslim piety and religious practice. Their stories revolve around their participation in an international Qur’an recitation competition.

A brief discussion about contemporary Islam and the Qur’an will be facilitated by Kristian Petersen and Marcia Bunge.

You can find more information here.

This event is free and open to the public!
