Are you passionate about student wellbeing? Apply to be the next Lindell Scholar and explore how libraries can support balance, connection, and mental health.

Every other year, the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library awards a junior or senior student the  Patricia Lindell Scholarship, established through the generosity of the Friends of the Library – Gustavus Library Associates. The recipient will be awarded $1,200 to undertake a research  project of value to the Library & Archives and/or the wider Gustavus community during spring 2026. The scholarship is awarded upon the successful completion of the project.

This year’s project will explore how libraries can support student wellbeing beyond books and study spaces. The Lindell Scholar will  investigate the role of academic libraries as wellness spaces—places that nurture balance, connection, and mental health. Working under the supervision of Professor Julie Gilbert, the Scholar will research what other colleges and universities are doing to promote wellness through their libraries, then design and implement a creative initiative here on campus. Whether that’s a program, event, or new set of recommendations, the Scholar will help shape the future of the library as a space that supports the whole student.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and with initiative, possess strong oral and written communication skills, and will be able to manage their time to complete the project successfully. The expected time commitment will be 2-4 hours per week.
