Spring Research Opportunity – That Pays

Deadline extended!

Are you going to be our next Lindell Scholar?

Are you interested in doing fieldwork that will benefit the library and the college – and possibly lead to publication? Would you like to get some funding to do this work?

Every other year, the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library selects a junior or senior student to be a Patricia Lindell Scholar, an opportunity established through the generosity of the Gustavus Library Associates. The successful candidate will be awarded $1,200 to undertake a student/faculty research project with a member of the library faculty. Some of these projects have led to publication. Because of the time commitment involved, applicants are strongly urged to apply for independent study credit for this project during the spring semester.

This year’s project will explore the role of the library and of research activities in the life of Gustavus students. Working with Professor Barbara Fister during spring semester, the scholarship recipient will design a mixed methods research project that will investigate students’ lived experience with a focus on how research – whether part of a course or pursued independently for personal or professional reasons – plays a part in their lives.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and with initiative, possess strong oral and written communication skills, and will be able to manage their time to complete the project successfully.

To apply:

  1. Submit a short essay (2 – 3 paragraphs) describing why you are interested in the project and the unique qualifications you would bring to it, including previous research experiences. Please also indicate if you would undertake the project as part of a credit-bearing independent study. Email your statement to Barbara Fister, fister@gustavus.edu.
  2. Request a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can speak to your credentials for this project, to be emailed directly to Barbara Fister, fister@gustavus.edu.

Applications are due Friday, November 17, 2017
